I have downloaded Template 8 and notice a body of alpha/numerical text at the top in the source.

Can this be deleted, what effect would that have and will it affect how the page is ranked in google with the text confusing the googlebot?

It doesn't confuse googlebot has it is javascript, not text.

Thanks for the reply, I can see how this script relates to your copyright and removal produces the on-line warning text. What else does this script do exactly as your link is elsewhere on the site. Is theresome other function for this script, can I pay to remove it
